Neuron Bio has registered an application with the Spanish Patents and Trademarks Office (OEPM) to patent a novel compound as a potential treatment for neurodegenerative ailments such as Alzheimer’s disease. The compound’s structural composition has never been described before and its active mechanism is different from that of statins.

The compound is known under the working code of NPS155, and is the result of research undertaken by the BioPharma division of Neuron Bio within its strategic plan of searching for neuroprotective compounds deriving from extracts produced by the more than 9,000 microorganisms in its collection.

NPS155 has been chosen for the neuroprotective capacity of its potent anti-oxidative activity and its ability to forestall neuron death. Neuron Bio is equipped to produce high quantities of this compound from cultures of the microorganism in question, which has also been patented.
In 2012, after the completion of current studies into its efficacy in cell cultures, the company will begin to assay the activity of the novel, patented compound in animal models with the intention of confirming its preventive effect against Alzheimer’s disease. Once these studies are concluded Neuron Bio will test the efficacy of the novel molecule in clinical trials.

The aim of this award is to contribute to the transfer of knowledge and to encourage research in this scientific area in Spain.

The prize is one of €3,000, although the company reserves the right to declare two winners ex aequo, in which case the amount would be divided equally.

As the terms of the recently published prize bid state, competition for this award is open to all those who have successfully defended their thesis within the area of neurosciences since the first day of January 2010 at a Spanish university. Applications must be presented before the fifteenth day of June 2012 by e-mail to premio@neuronbio.com

Burgos, director of the Neuron BioPharma division of Neuron Bio, gave a talk in the Biochemistry Department of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre (Brazil) on 23 November, in which he spoke about the advances made by this division of the company in their research into the neuroprotective compound NST 0037.
In his talk, entitled, “Developing a novel statin to prevent Alzheimer’s disease”, Dr. Burgos explained that as a result of their research Neuron Bio had discovered and demonstrated that statins (cholesterol reducing drugs) are able to prevent the neurodegeneration related to Alzheimer’s disease. As a result of their research, the division has patented a new statin that reduces cholesterol levels in the blood, prevents neuron death and protects against memory loss. Further to this, the BioPharma division is due to begin clinical trials with this compound during the coming year.
